With a GRBL based controller and an inexpensive harbor freight X2 mini mill, you could build a CNC mini mill in under $2,000. This certainly won't be anywhere near enough for any kind of commercial operation, but I'd say it's an excellent choice for a hobbyist looking to play with a CNC mill in his garage.

I just helped 7hc build a harbor freight micro mill with the original screws and it turns 25ipm max. every machine I have built uses windows xp on and older pc, and mach3. I use emachineshop for most of my drawings and d2nc to produce the g-code. all of these are low cost and work well for hobby use.

Whoo. The motor on your hf is rated at 2500rpm. The other motor is a 1000 rpm faster. you may end up eating alot of end mills. I suppose that you could use the mill for wood, but then I don't know how the gears hold up. I don't know if any one has done this with a mini mill, but maybe you could try a tread mill motor.

The Sieg X1 micro-mill was purchased from Harbor Freight. Stepper motors are Ebay surplus 150oz/in. NEMA 34′s. Motor mounts are made from 1/2″ baltic birch ply. It seemed to stall out without a whole lot of resistance and when I had the steppers locked in place it sure didn't feel like 400 oz-in of torque!

The first picture is the mill I am going to modify. It is a Model T-981 from Central Machinery. It probably came from Harbor Freight, but I bought it used. It was made in 1988. Still runs well and just needed a few minor adjustments. I went with this over a Bridgeport due to price and because it's a nice size for hobby work.
