The only thing I would add is that the operating losses on a soft start can be eliminated by using a bypass contactor. I had one customer use a VFD once on a vertical ball mill because the motor was designed for 50Hz and used in the US at 60Hz, but we had to oversize the VFD by 100% to get enough starting torque from it.
