The tiny town of Marble Colorado, off of Highway 133 in Gunnison County is home to one of the most photographed sights in Colorado, Crystal Mill. It also is home to the Yule Marble Quarry which produces some of the highest quality marble in the world. The Lincoln Memorial was created from marble from the Yule Marble Quarry.

The hike is located in the small town of Marble, about 40 minutes east of Carbondale on Highway 133. Drive through the town and past beautiful Beaver Lake and find a place to park before the road turns into a smaller 4x4 road. It's possible to drive to Crystal Mill with a high clearance 4x4, but hiking there is definitely recommended.

Jim, are you familiar with the "road" to Crystal? Do you have a 4WD vehicle? It is easier to get to Crystal if you come from the town of Marble on FR 314. The road from the Maroon Bells area is difficult indeed. If you are not familiar with the road, then look it up on the Internet. It is a very unforgiving trail from the Maroon Bells area.

The Loop is usually taken by people coming from Marble since it is just east of town. Take County Road 3 east; the road will fork: Road 314 to the right will take you past the Crystal Mill, the most photographed Mill in Colorado. A section of this route is labeled Devil's Punchbowl; it is narrow, rugged, and not a good choice for beginners.

Hagerman Peak is similar in rock conditions to Snowmass Mountain, hence, its a Class 2+ scramble on largely rocky, broken talus debris via the south face. Reaching this summit requires a 4WD and/or a backpack trip. If you can drive into Lead King Basin, the climb can be easily completed in a day, but the drive in is difficult and often complicated by avalanche damage.

Crystal City Road #314. Crystal City Road #314 is a 9 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Carbondale, Colorado that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and ohv/off road driving and is best used from June until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Located just outside the small town of Marble, the rough, one-lane road to the mill, historically known as the Sheep Mountain Mill, is called Crystal Mill Road (County Road 3). It's totally unpaved. Starting at the town of Marble, the road is 9.01km (5.6 miles) long. It's not an easy road, so make sure to prepare thoroughly.

7/28/17 - Drove Schofield south from Marble. There is evidence of several large avalanches that have been cleared. A couple of the washes south of Crystal City have been filled. The snow bridge at the bottom of the Punchbowl has been clear of the road bed for quite a while. CR 317 at the very south end has suffered from several mud slides.

The drive up Redstone canyon to get there is worth it all by itself. Once you get to Marble, RPS rentals is located just about the end of main street where it turns into a dirt road. We rented two of the Polaris Rangers that seat 3 people abreast. We took them up to the Crystal Mill. The Rangers are the way to go.

It appears you will take Route 133 to Marble for the Crystal Mill. This goes through Redstone, an interesting old town with an historic home, Redstone Castle, that can be toured. Also, there are Coke ovens just outside town. You can hire a Jeep & driver in Marble to visit the mill, don't even think of taking an SUV there.

The Crystal River Valley and Marble remain among the most beautiful areas in the world because of its pristine topography. In the appendix the authors list over 100 buildings built totally or in part from Yule Creek marble.
