It almost sounds as if a brake pad was completely worn and the metal backing was grinding against the disc. It seems to do it only 5-7 times out of 10 and only when turning to the right (1.5 turns through to full lock), moving forward (does not do it in reverse), and I can feel the grinding through the car and steering wheel.

I don't know what you mean by "sounds like shifting in the brake pads," but a lot of brake pads will make a metal on metal squeal, at least that is how I would describe it. If it is the sound that I am trying to describe, then it is normal. But if you have a deeper grinding noise, then you could have other problems.

Most of the time, there'll still be a light grind even when you aren't braking. See Saab 9-3 brakes grinding for more info if you think this may be the problem. Tires that are misaligned and have been allowed to wear unevenly can also cause a noise that is very similar to wheel bearing noise as well. So be cautious of that.

Saab Grinding Brakes Noise. Feb 22, 2019nbsp018332IMO the grinding shuddering noise is because the brake pads are new and not bedded. I discovered the same noise the other day when I had to hit the brakes fairly hard. My wifes van had a similar issue when she got new pads. What j did to solve the issue was to bed the brakes.

Missing brake pad hardware would cause this type of rattle that goes away during braking. The brake shims or "brake pad fitting kit" might not have been fitted during the last brake job. They should be replaced with each brake job but reusing the old ones if they are in good condition shouldn't create this noise.
