My shop teacher used to hold up his hand and say" Saftey First!" He had half of three fingers missing on that hand! Worked for me! When I worked in a machine shop, years ago, it was, no long sleeve shirts, eye protection all the time, no rings, short hair, tight clothes. I never wore any jewelry, until I remarried a while back.

The pan came from a local thrift shop. I used a 5" aluminum drive wheel this time and made another idler arm like the first, but reversed to work on the left of the post. I have it set up on my mini and it works very well for metal or wood but I must pull the end cover off and see if any metal grindings are being pulled into the headstock!:(

I've been considering a new grinder for the shop, and while it's no secret that I have been a fan of the KMG for a long time, some recent long/hard thinking has brought me to the conclusion that there is simply not any 2x72 machine out there that I could purchase, and use right out of the box, without at least some modifications.

So I bought my Delonghi KG89(KG79 is the exact same model without the brushed steel finish) about 6 months ago to replace my manual hand grinder because I started having fore-arm cramps(for a healthy young male to get fore-arm cramps is near impossible). I used it for 4 months and gave up, going back to another hand grinder.

With the grinding wheel turned 90 degree to the arm travel and a jig to hold the blades. For what little accuracy a lawn mower blade needs it worked OK. Location: The Black Forest in Germany.

Poor Man's Surface Grinder. 08-03-2008, 03:24 PM. Anyone tried using a modified radial arm saw for a surface grinder? Something needs to be done to keep the dust out of the motor, but for clean up work it seems like it might be feasible, and in the realm of home shop machinery solutions.

After the machine is in place and lined up on the lathe bed, a plywood key is cut and fastened (red arrow) to keep it in line: With the upper arm in place on the butt hinge and with some tension on the belt, it should be level on the top (red arrow).
