Anyone ever tried grinding valve seats without a typical seat grinder? just curious as I have a boat im rebuilding (BBC 454) and am in need of a basic valve job. For poohs and giggles have contemplated doing it myself. From my research the old school grinders are nothing more than a right angle drill motor and matching arbors / stones etc.

You will have to acquire an assortment of seat stones of different angles and sizes, and custom grind them for specific jobs. Way more to it than I can describe here.

Grind a 45 seat, top it with a quick 30 degree top angle. Drop a ground valve into the guide/seat. determine where your upper seat hits the valve, Use bluing, or as I do, just tap the valve into the seat and read the contact mark. 30 degree stone will lower/narrow seat contact on valve. 60 will raise/narrow the seat from the bottom.

Valve Grinding Oil. A pet peeve of mine is using transmission oil in your valve refacer instead of valve grinding oil. You should not use transmission oil to grind valves. Yes it is an oil, and yes, it is cheap. However, transmission oil will actually attack the bond that holds the grains together, decreasing the life of your abrasive dramatically.

View attachment 5154924 Black and Decker hasn't made valve grinding equipment for over 40 years to my knowledge. There are a few videos here black and decker valve grinder history - Bing video that are worth looking at as they are of similar models. From what I can see you are missing the diamond nibs for dressing the stones and their holders.

Around 2005 or '06 we decided to make a valve grinder. We started with a blank piece of paper (SOLIDWORKS page) and first put both extremes of valve sizes on the screen (length and diameter). We then designed a unique centerless chuck, cast base, form-fitted cover, Sioux size wheel and copied the bearing design of the KW spindle.
