Remember to use light pressure while pushing the lathe tool against the grinding tool; otherwise, you'll lose a lot of the metal in the shank. I have done some grinding on a CNC lathe with reasonable results. I only needed to grind a few parts, which were made from 8620, hardened to 62Rc. The parts required a little OD grinding, and some hairy internal grinding. As these were machine tool spindles with an HSK-60 taper they needed to be right on.

7. I use a camel brown aluminum oxide wheel for the rough grinding of the lathe tools. Then i do the last bit of grinding on a green silicon-carbide wheel. I find that the silicon-carbide leaves a much better finish and will produce a mucher keener edge than A/O alone. But take it for what its worth - i'm essentially a newb.

Adjust the legs so that the tool rests are at the same height as your lathe's tool rest. Grinding wheels. Both sides of my grinder are outfitted with 80-grit Norton 3x wheels. I find that these wheels remove material quickly and produce an edge that I can use without additional honing. A 6ʺ wheel runs around $45; an 8ʺ wheel costs $55.

I want to turn a semicircular cross-section groove in the face of a washer made of 6061-T6 aluminum. The OD of the groove is 2". The washer (disc?) will be held in a 3-jaw chuck with accurately bored soft jaws on a 14x40" lathe. My plan is to grind a tool bit of the right profile and plunge cut after trepanning out a lot of the material first.
