I believe the drive roller turns the bottom roller, so the bottom roller turns the opposite of the drive roller, as the grain path is b/w the drive roller and the bottom roller. The bottom roller gap is set off the drive roller, this is critical! This video may help you assuming similar to monster 3 roller mill.

Albany. Feb 4, 2014. #19. Consider that the MM2-2.0 comes with a 1/2 inch shaft only, while the MM3 (non-2.0) can be had in either 3/8 or (for an extra $5) 1/2 inch shaft. It only matters if you already have a strong corded drill that happens to have a 3/8 chuck.

I bought an original MM-3 w stainless rolls. There were very few 3 roller mills out at the time. Once I learned that the base needs a little movement, I've loved it. It was a PITA when I had it all tight on the base. I mounted a 1/2 drill to the base and control speed with a router speed control. I really like the mill.

Its only a 2 roller, and its not the best mechanically. Seems like its made of decent material, but after 2-3 brews, the roller started to turn unevenly (like the gap gets bigger and smaller as it turns) and the shaft also became harder to turn. The hopper is also a PIA, because only those 3 tabs on each side hold it together.

Using a standard 2-roller homebrew mill, I crushed each malt using four different gap settings. The gap settings were 1.25 mm, 1.0 mm, 0.75 mm and 0.50 mm, and I used a feeler gauge to confirm these gap setting between each milling. After milling, I performed a grain sieve test on the different malts and crushes, and recorded all of the results.

3.5 Stars but could be 4.5.. Decided to upgrade my smaller two roller mill to a three-roller unit. Did a lot of research and had conversations the company that manufactured the unit to clarify some things. When the mill showed up, I completely dissembled the unit to check out the bearings and all the clearances on the machined surfaces.

FYI- Francis himself uses a 2 roller. It's not like he doesn't have the choice. I guess the moral of the story is that a 3 roller doesn't give any better of a crush than a 2 roller can give, but maybe with a little less fuss (no conditioning, double pass thru, changing the gap). OP.

I use a monster mill 3 roller and I DON'T recommend it. The top undriven roller always gets stuck, preventing grain from falling through the unit. I've never used a 2 roll mill, but I imagine it's more than sufficient for homebrewing.
