One thing I absolutely hated about my eerf grinder was the tracking mechanism and the floppy arm. I like that the sayber had a double shear mount for the arm pivot. On the eerf if I tightened the bolt to get rid of the floppy arm, it wouldn't pivot anymore. On this build I turned a couple pieces of delrin to go on each side of the arm.

Posted January 24, 2017. With the exception of a few hand tools most domestic white goods and tools at the budget end of the market have a motor of about 1hp, (750w) ie 4" angle grinder, washing machine, etc, up market a bit and the motors get a bit bigger. But if he can't find 1.5-2hp then a 1-1.25hp is an option.

There were changes made to the design, in fact, there are a number of my design changes in the final version of the EERF grinder. I continued to modify then and it eventually became the Grinder in a Box. It is a framework for a grinder that can ship in a flat rate box through the USPS.

He took the EERF grinder plans and gets them made in large quantities. I took the EERF plans to a local shop to be waterjet cut out for me and they wanted something like 3x the cost of his kit to do it. Of course, it's always that way for one-off machining work. Anyway, mine's been great for the better part of 3 years now; no complaints.

Started with the basic EERF grinder design and then made some of the bolt holes tapped and threaded instead of bolt together along with a 50 lbs air shock for belt tension... The biggest change though was instead of using a NEMA 56C motor and speed control....I used an existing 8" variable speed hardwheel grinder 1 HP.

The GIB is lazer cut from 1/2" plate. I think that you would be better off getting a GIB unless you have a good method of cutting the parts from 1/2" plate. Most who are making knives really appreciate the veriable speed obtained by using a VFD and the multi wheel type grinder as oppossed to a Grizzly, Coote, Kalamazo or other 2 wheel grinder.

I was given a single phase 2 hp industrial motor, my guys at my work wired it for me so it plugs into 110 and has a on off switch, I want to direct mount it and install my drive wheel directly to the shaft.

Unlike the EERF this will be a horizontal and vertical grinder. It's still being tweaked and I am waiting on some parts to come in. As soon as I get the base done it will be ready for paint. The CAD files will be free to download of course. And anyone who makes alterations or new features can have their files posted for others to use.

My grinder parts are here. 1.5 hp motor, 5" drive wheel, 4" tracking wheel, 5" contact wheel. The drive and tracking wheels are from Wilmont. These are fresh from the water jet shop. The working end of an adjuster. The thread on the main stem is 1/4-28. The small thread is 8-32. The small stem still needs to be trimmed for length. The small ring on the bottom will be inset into the plane handle and the adjuster will pivot on it. The small thread needs to be fixed either into the main stem or into the ring.

I've built two grinders, a NWGS with pillow block and step pulleys for the drive train, and a direct drive grinder of my own design. I much prefer the direct drive for several reasons, though I understand it can get a little pricey when purchasing vfds. Given the choice between a KMG and EERF, I'd likely choose the latter.
