Amazingly, the town – and mill – recovered, and by 1907 Pacolet Mills was back on top as a leading textile manufacturer in the South. The manufacturing company was sold to another textile giant, Roger Milliken, in 1947 and operated as Deering Milliken until the name was changed to Milliken and Company in 1978. The plant closed in 1980.

In 1881 the textile manufacturing pioneer John H. Montgomery and his associates purchased 350 acres on the Pacolet River at Trough Shoals. The General Assembly incorporated the Pacolet Manufacturing Company the following year, and by 1884 a three-story, 10,000-spindle mill was in full operation.

This town, like all of those along the Pacolet, was based on textile manufacturing. And, as with many southern mill villages, the mills are now long gone. I really didn't take that many photos of the community, just one shot of the lower dam. Clifton Mill #1 was demolished in 2004, and Clifton #2 came down in 2011.

Pacolet was dedicated to helping mothers work if they desired. The mill management set up a day nursery that cared for 8,500 children daily, making 6,000 annual days' work possible for mothers.
