I just bought a smaller horizontal mill with a add on vertical head. It's a Rusnok head, Model 70 . Belt drive, 5 speeds. 380,700, 1200, 2500, and 5200 rpm. It has a quill with an 1 1/2 inch travel and a 1/2 inch collet with a 3/8 split bushing in it. ( so I could use 1/2 or 3/8 cutters without any extra work).

Doubt you will find R9 or 5C spindles for a vertical attachment for that UM. Most folks graft an M head on those. If you put the mounting flange for the head right on the end of the stub, there's not much daylight between the end of the spindle and the table. M heads are either number two morse collets, or number seven brown and sharp.

The collet draw bar shown above, the indexing head, and the vertical head use 3SB/3C collets. The 3SB collets and 3C collets are the same size - so no problem there. For any vertical milling that this machine can not do, I'll use my Rusnok milling machine.

The Rusnok head is not the model 70. He said was the heavier one. The Tag said model ST. Was a 3 phase motor for the head but the VFD converted the 110. My big concern, I did not take a dial indicator. The head is bolted to a pipe with a flangethat is welded together.

My Rusnok model 70 is mounted on a Sheldon milling machine with a 2" overarm support. I bought a piece of cold rolled and turned down the last two inches to accommodate the 1 1/2" adapter that came with the head (which was on a TM originally). I think the company made 2" adapters for the heads as well but they're as rare as hen's teeth.
